Mission Statement

The North Providence Barracudas Swim Team is a non-profit organization formed to promote competitive swimming for all qualified swimmers from 7 to 18 years of age. It is the goal of the North Providence Barracudas to:

1. Provide safe, beneficial exercise and an opportunity to practice social skills in a positive environment.

2. Help each swimmer realize their potential as an aquatic athlete through instruction in stroke technique, starts, turns and endurance.

3. Develop the qualities of good sportsmanship by becoming an “ELM Tree Winner.”

4. Teach self-discipline, endurance, teamwork and doing one’s best.
Remember, on the North Providence Barracudas Swim Team, each and every swimmer is a winner.

Season & Practice Schedule

Practice Times

Practices are held Monday through Friday from 4:30 – 5:30 pm. Swimmers should make every effort to attend all practices. Obviously, the more a swimmer practices, the better they will get.

Barracuda Season:

Swim Team Parents Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

The North Providence Barracudas offer competitive swimming for ages 6 to 18 with individual events in four strokes (freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly), individual medley (all four strokes in one event), medley relay, and freestyle relay. There are five age groups: 8 & under, 9-10, 11-12, 13-14, 15-18.

We are also offering a Learn to Swim program.

General Swim Team Questions

1. What is the swim team and why would I want my child to participate?
It's fun. It's great exercise. It builds confidence. It's a great way for your child to meet other kids in the neighborhood. It's a great way for you to meet other parents.

2. Who can answer my questions about the swim team?
Ron Lamothe who coordinates the swim team efforts, Megan Giammarco, the North Providence Pool & Fitness Center Aquatics Director, or one of the assistant coaches will be able to help you.

3. What strokes do the swimmers use in competition?
Freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly.

4. What swimming strokes does my child need to know to join the team?
If your child is able to swim the four competitive strokes (freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly), then they should come to swim team practice and have the coach evaluate them for the team.

5. I just want my child to learn how to swim better. Do they have to swim in competition?
You should discuss this with the coach.

6. I see that there are different age groups for the swimmers. How does that work?
The age groups are 8 & under, 9-10, 11-12, 13-14, 15-18. Every other year your child will have an "up" year when they are the oldest in their age group and a "down" year when they are the youngest in their age group. The system generally works well.

7. Do the North Providence Barracudas swim in an Olympic size pool?
No. The length of Barracudas pool is 25 meters. An Olympic size pool is 50 meters.

8. How often and when is practice?
The practice schedule is available in the Parents/Swimmers Handbook available on this page.

9. Should I stay and watch a swim practice?
You're welcome to watch. Please refrain from talking with the coach during practice. Practice is when the coach spends time with the swimmers. Please hold you questions for the coach until before or after practice.

10. What happens if we have a conflict and my child is not able to attend practice?
Discuss this with the coach.

11. How much does it cost to participate in the Barracudas Swim Team Program?
Pool membership is required and there is a $50 fee for team membership.
